Celebrating McMaster Women in Tech and International Women’s Day

On March 8th, McMaster recognizes and celebrates International Women’s Day!  It is an important time to acknowledge and reflect on the achievements and great work done by women, particularly in the IT community. Within McMaster’s IT community alone, we are extremely grateful to have strong women tech leaders that choose to enhance campus experience through technology.  

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #BreaktheBias. While we celebrate all the amazing work women accomplish in IT and STEM, there are still challenges that women must overcome to reach equitable opportunity. “As a woman in IT I would say that my most challenging adversary is myself, believing in my own abilities. That is why I feel very grateful to have had many mentors and sponsors, colleagues and friends, both women and men, who have encouraged and supported me in Higher Education IT,” says AVP and CTO Gayleen Gray.  

In 2020, the Office of the AVP and CTO launched the “McMaster Women in Tech” initiative, highlighting and recognizing women tech changemakers within the McMaster community. Part of this project was to provide an enduring platform for women to inspire and offer diverse perspectives on their experiences within IT.  

There are many reasons why women should pursue IT and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) opportunities. Angela Di Nello, Operations Manager, Research & High-Performance Computing Support, articulates that “working as part of a research-support unit that specializes in IT has given me a great variety of new challenges, as well as the opportunity to contribute to so many McMaster departments, projects and initiatives”. 

McMaster continues to encourage and support equity and inclusion, particularly through the Equity and Inclusion Office.
