Celebrating International Women’s Day and McMaster Women in Tech
International Women’s Day (IWD), observed annually on March 8th, is a global celebration of women’s achievements and a call to action for gender equality. This year’s theme, #InspireInclusion, resonates deeply in the tech industry, where women continue to break barriers, innovate, and drive positive change.
1. Breaking Stereotypes: Women in STEM
The misconception that women are not naturally inclined toward science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields persists. However, history proves otherwise. Women like Ada Lovelace, the world’s first computer programmer, and Grace Hopper, who coined the term “bug” in computing, have made significant contributions to STEM. It’s time to dispel the myth that these fields are better suited for men. Fostering diversity in STEM brings varied perspectives and insights, leading to better solutions and innovations.
2. Amplifying Voices: Women in Technology
International Women’s Day serves as a platform to amplify the voices of women in technology. Let’s celebrate their achievements, challenge biases, and break down barriers.
3. Bridging the Digital Gender Gap
IWD 2023 explored the impact of the digital gender gap on economic and social inequalities. Women and girls champion transformative technology and digital education. Organizations like UNESCO and UN-Women actively promote women and girls in science, emphasizing the need for equal opportunities and representation.
In 2020, the Office of the AVP and CTO launched the “McMaster Women in Tech” initiative, highlighting and recognizing women tech changemakers within the McMaster community. Part of this project was to provide an enduring platform for women to inspire and offer diverse perspectives on their experiences within IT.
McMaster continues to encourage and support equity and inclusion, ensuring that women thrive in the dynamic world of technology.
